Aw, nuts!
By: Rob McClurkan
Our Problem: Squirrel lost his all his nuts trying to squeeze too many into his home. We need to help him get them back!
The challenge: See how many nuts you can store in your squirrel house before it goes "Kaboom!"
Materials: Foil, coffee filter, pipe cleaners, "nuts"
Students in first grade were given a chance to design a way to store as many nuts as they could. We tested their solutions by turning their package around and upside down. If any nuts fell out, we'd say, "Aw, nuts!" The class record was 35 nuts! I loved this challenge because if something didn't work out, the kids would say "Aw, nuts!" and try again! It taught them to not get too upset when things didn't turn out the way they expected and to persevere. They each overcame their challenges and exceeded their expectations!
